چکیده

Increasing environmental requirements like the National Defense Authorization Act, Clean Air Act Amendments and various Executive Orders (E.O. 122856, E.O. 12780 and E.O. 12873) are constraining the continued use of hazardous materials and ozone depleting substances (ODSs). In compliance with these laws and Department of Defense policies including Secretary of the Air Force Policy Letter 94A-003, the Air Force has been actively engaged in developing replacements for ODSs, hazardous materials and processes. Funding constraints facilitated teaming arrangements between government agencies and contractors which has produced successful reduction programs. This paper documents results of hazardousmaterial reduction programs associated with the FlOO engine family produced by Pratt & Whitney and the FllO engine family produced by General Electric. The scope of the effort encompasses maintenance technical orders, qualification requirements, management strategy and metrics as well as efforts ongoing at the San Antonio and Oklahoma Air Logistic Centers. Conclusions include reductions in hazardous materials and ODS uses, teaming arrangements within government and industry, and the removal of ODSs requirements from technical documentation.

Introduction: Chlorofluorocarbons are one of the most important ozone-depleting substances used as coolant gases in refrigerators and freezers in developing countries such as Iran. The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward the protection of cooling systems and control of ozone-depleting gases emission into the environment among health volunteers i...

The Impact of Ozone-Depleting Substances on Tropical Upwelling, as Revealed by the Absence of Lower-Stratospheric Cooling since the Late 1990s

The impact of ozone-depleting substances on global lower-stratospheric temperature trends is widely recognized. In the tropics, however, understanding lower-stratospheric temperature trends has proven more challenging. While the tropical lower-stratospheric cooling observed from 1979 to 1997 has been linked to tropical ozone decreases, those ozone trends cannot be of chemical origin, as active ...

Choosing policy instruments for controlling ozone depleting substances in a developing context: the case of Chile.

Chile ratified the Montreal Protocol in 1990 which sets out an agenda for the reduction and then elimination of ozone depleting substances (ODS); however, by 1998 the country had not yet defined a strategy to encourage greater compliance, so that in the same year the National Environmental Commission decided to examine the policy options available. This paper examines the process followed to de...

Attribution of observed changes in stratospheric ozone and temperature

Three recently-completed sets of simulations of multiple chemistry-climate models with greenhouse gases only, with all anthropogenic forcings, and with anthropogenic and natural forcings, allow the causes of observed stratospheric changes to be quantitatively assessed using detection and attribution techniques. The total column ozone response to halogenated ozone depleting substances and to nat...
